UPS is entering the drone delivery market with its new company, UPS Flight Forward to take a share of the soon to be billion-dollar market. The news comes after UPS filed for a Part 135 certification from the FAA, which is only available to Wing Aviation.
The news doesn’t come as much of a surprise as UPS has been seen in the past working on their drone delivery technology. UPS and Matternet are working together to transport medical samples across the WakeMed system in North Carolina. Currently, the WakeMed deliveries are done via couriers in cars, making deliveries take longer than needed. The drones allow for same-day delivery of medical samples across the WakeMed network.
Many companies are jumping into the drone delivery world hoping to deliver the world’s packages. Wing Aviation is currently exploring drone deliveries in Canberra Australia, delivering things like coffee and small medicines. Wing is also trialing drone deliveries in Finland and will soon to be fling in America. Amazon Prime Air is currently testing delivery drones in the US along with the UK where multiple long-distance tests have been completed with success.
